Roman’s coronagraph takes its first look

After guidance-system tests on 15–21 September, NASA’s Roman Space Telescope pointed its Coronagraph Instrument at a faint star in the Large Magellanic Cloud on 22 September, then again on 27 September with cooled detectors. Pointing held steadier than one hundred-thousandth of a degree for up to eight hours. Our take: that steadiness is what will let Roman blot out a star’s glare to see the planets next to it.
